An 80-year-old Preston resident contacted the Cosy Homes Advice Team after starting to feel worried about insulation work he signed up for

20th February 2026

The resident received a call from a Preston phone number offering a free quote for people aged between 70 and 80 years

He called the Cosy Homes Advice Team and told Georgianna that he had been approached by Warmth in UK Ltd, operating via the website https://warmthinuk.com

Warmth in UK Ltd attended the property and quoted £4,000 for the installation of a multi-layer reflective foil insulation product to be fitted between the loft rafters. The quote also included two chemical treatments of the loft timbers to deter mice, rats, wasps and bees.

A £500 deposit was paid by credit card.

The resident had loft insulation installed in approximately 2007 through a Preston Council scheme, but was unsure whether it met current standards.

Reflecting on the quotation from Warmth in UK Ltd, he stated “I must have had a senior moment, because I wouldn’t normally have done anything like this.

He described the Warmth in UK Ltd representative as personable and persuasive, explaining, “He seemed a very nice, genuine bloke… I think that is what kind of persuaded me… I couldn’t doubt him.”

Following advice from Georgianna, an urgent inspection was arranged through the Cosy Homes Little Van of Warm (LVoW) for the next day (even though it was the weekend). Chris from LVoW measured the existing loft insulation and confirmed that it exceeded 270mm and met recommended standards.

No signs of condensation, damp or excess moisture were observed. The resident reported that Chris “measured the loft insulation and said it was adequate,” and that in his opinion, “he didn’t think the work needed doing, and he thought it would actually probably make things worse, because they were putting this kind of aluminium foil on the rafters, which would mean… less circulation.”

Photographs taken during the visit from LVoW differed from images previously shown by the Warmth in UK Ltd representative. The company had reportedly raised concerns about condensation and moisture; however, the inspection found no supporting evidence. These photos show the existing loft insulation and were taken by Chris (LVoW) during his visit.

The resident contacted his credit card provider immediately to dispute the £500 deposit.

He also contacted Warmth in UK Ltd directly and requested a refund, acting within the 14-day cooling-off period. The installation was halted before any works commenced.

The case raises concerns regarding targeted marketing towards older residents, high pricing for unnecessary works, potential misrepresentation of loft condition, and persuasive sales tactics. The company have been reported to Trading Standards.
