Frequently Asked Questions: Ventilation
Yes, trickle vents will be installed on new or replacement windows. They are mandatory to ensure adequate air circulation, reduce condensation and prevent mould.
If insulation is added without the correct ventilation, the home can become ‘airtight’. This means moisture from cooking or showering has nowhere to go, leading to condensation and mould. As part of the retrofit with Cosy Homes in Lancashire, we’ll let you know if ventilation work is needed before the installation of insulation or new window and door upgrades.
If you have an insulated home and are still struggling with damp, a PIV system can be installed. This operates from the loft in your home; it draws in fresh air and pushes it into the house. This helps force out moist air through trickle vents or natural gaps.
This can be effective for short–term solutions, such as clearing steam. However, it isn’t effective for long-term ventilation. Moisture can form at various times of the day, and opening a window for only 10 minutes doesn’t provide consistent airflow to help prevent build-up.
